Thursday – Writing Tips Day

Thursday, July 31st, 2014

Renni Browne gave me some fabulous tips when I was editing THE CHRONICLES OF JOYA. One of the most invaluable was record it. When you’re writing away you don’t always write the exact thought in your mind as you’d intended. You read back over what you’ve written and it looks fine. Or you may spot a few errors and change them. But do you notice everything? Do you have the best piece of communication in front of you? More than likely not.

Your eye reads what it expects to see. Your ear on the other hand is more difficult to trick. Your ear picks up what your eye misses. So, if you can afford it, invest in a dictaphone. Whatever you write, record it and play it back. Does it flow? Can its meaning be misinterpreted? Is it too waffly? Too sparse? If you’re writing dialogue, the ear is the perfect medium to find out if it’s fluid and natural rather than stilted and false.

Even if your budget doesn’t stretch to a tape recorder of some kind, or you don’t have a phone you can record on, at least read what you’ve written aloud. If you write articles, stories or novels it’s invaluable. After all, it took someone else reading ‘Salem’s Lot’ to notice Stephen King’s error shooting local peasants when he meant pheasants.

And if you’re writing letters and emails you’ve more than likely received one that you’ve misinterpreted. It’s easily done with the written word. Chances are it wasn’t recorded. Make sure it doesn’t happen with what you write. Let your ear give it the cheer.

Tuesday – Creative Flow and Ideas Day

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Oh my gosh, Teal here! How great is this? Back here for the second week running. Yeeha. Liane and Freddie are busy writing and switching, so I jumped at the chance to come back down to Earth and chat to you guys.

Okay, back to creative flow. Ready?

You’re having a dream about our planet, Joya. You’re on the back of Darcy’s motorbike flying over the lilac mountains. Your hands are buried into her fur. The wind whips through your t-shirt. She makes her descent and you speed through the red snaky paths. Sand flies up into your face. You close your eyes and the bike stops. You’re at Hobo’s pink and brown van.

You smile. He hands you a cup of Choco Works. You grab it with both hands. You take a sip. The velvet liquid settles on your tongue and slips down your throat. You close your eyes, lick your lips and smile. What a great dream this is.

Someone tugs on your sleeve. You brush them off, and take another mouthful of Chocco Works. The tugging becomes violent and you spill the drink down your t-shirt.

I’ll leave the rest of the story up to you. This might be good practise for you. After all, you could be the next Earthie we take back to Joya ….

Hope to see you soon!  Happy Tuesday, Teal xxx

Thursday – Writing Tips Day

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

Do you write? Never tried but think about it? A great way to get started – or to bring yourself out of a block - is to write about something you’re passionate about.

Even if you’re not a writer, grab a pen, pencil or a new word document and write about something that infuriates you. It could be a neighbour, a criminal, a family situation. Anything you like.

Feel the emotions inside you, notice how your face changes when you think about it, how your eyes narrow, your body hunches, your fists clench. Using those physical reactions and your emotional reactions, write fifty words about it. If you write more, good for you.

Have fun.

Wednesday – Help Yourself Day

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014

On planet Joya the Switchers are all about helping themselves and taking action. It’s what they signed up for – action on Earth. And what does immediate action do? It speeds your efficiency and gives you more time.

Just for today take more action. If you receive four emails and only one is urgent, reply to them all within five minutes. That way you don’t have to come back to the other three.

If you see a pair of shoes on the floor, grab them and put them away.

Even if you only take immediate action for 30 minutes in your day, you’ll find yourself smiling at how efficient you are. You’ll also have cleared your mind of the clutter of holding that ‘I need to do that later’ thought in your mind. By doing this your mind and body are more efficient and you’ll lose the dread surrounding the things you’re putting off.

Go for it and have fun. Liane x

Tuesday – Creative Flow and Ideas Day

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014

Freddie couldn’t make it today but one of the other characters on Joya has found out Freddie starts you off with a story on Tuesdays. And she’s desperate to join in.

Luckily, she knows to keep it from Darcy. I’ll pass you over to her.

Hi, everyone! I’m Teal. Oh my gosh, this is sooo exciting. I can’t believe Liane’s written a book about us. I’m in a book. Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow. Okay, stay calm, get focused. Okay, I’m ready.

You’re in the middle of a swamp. You start to sink. You hear a rustle above you.

What happens next? Over to you. Have fun! Happy Tuesday, Teal. xxx

Thursday – Writing Tips Day

Thursday, July 17th, 2014

Is the main character in your story perfect? If he is, give him a flaw. Readers like someone human, someone they can relate to and nobody’s perfect. Is he greedy, impatient or stupid?

Look at your favourite characters in books and see what their flaws are and you’ll see it adds to why you like them.

Wednesday – Help Yourself Day

Wednesday, July 16th, 2014

Those of you who’ve read The Chronicles of Joya will agree that most of the characters on planet Joya know how to have fun.

So let’s all pick one things to do today that we think isn’t fun. I want you to change your thoughts about doing this so it will be fun. Pretend, change your thoughts – they are yours to change – and watch how the unenjoyable can become fun if we want it to.

Maybe you have to imagine you and everyone else are talking like Mickey Mouse. Do, feel, say, hear whatever you need to in order to turn the non-fun act into fun. Try singing, dancing and smiling or laughing while you do it – as long as it’s safe, of course.

And, remember, have fun! Happy Wednesday, Liane x

Tuesday – Creative Flow and Ideas Day

Tuesday, July 15th, 2014

Hey, Freddie Maya here. I like getting involved, man. And a ferret needs to stay in the loop, know what I’m saying? If Liane’s going to keep telling the world about us on facebook and in her books, I gotta make sure no one on planet Joya finds out.

Okay, ready to get those creative juices flowing?

You’re alone in a library when you hear a scream. Something furry flies towards you.

What happens next?   Have fun. And if you want to know more about me, check me out in Liane’s book THE CHRONICLES OF JOYA.

   Laters,

   Freddie x

Thursday – Writing Tips Day

Thursday, July 10th, 2014

Write three lines of a story and read it aloud. How does it sound? Now read it again and imagine you are reading it aloud to a tough audience. What do you need to do to raise it to a higher level, to stop your audience falling asleep? :)

   Happy Thursday! Liane x
