When you’ve found the genre you want to write in, make sure you read all you can in that genre. You’ll get great ideas to help you grow. You’ll see what does work and what doesn’t work so well. You’ll see what’s been done to death and what is fresh and new.
Also read something in totally opposite genres. This will open your mind to see how some of these characters, storylines or themes can cross over into your genre.
This goes for non-fiction too. What’s already out there in your field? What elements of bestselling books in other unrelated fields could be used to great effect in your book? Exciting, isn’t it?

The way we sit, stand and walk can affect the way we feel. If you’re reading this and slouching, sit up and expand your chest. If your concentrating with a frown, grin. Feeling better? I bet.
Now dance in your chair. Hey, if you want to get up and dance around, go for it.
For today, ask yourself am I smiling? Am I walking or sitting straight? All these things lead to a happier day. And you deserve it, baby! Go for it!

You walk into a strange room and the door locks behind you. The floor is covered in water and the only piece of furniture is a three-legged armchair. You wade over to it and sit down. But then the chair starts to move.

Hey, everyone. Friday again. Time to tell you what I’ve been up to.
I’ve written a short story.
Another short story, The Shark and the Dolphin, has been published on the Writers Clinic website. Check it out at www.writers-clinic.webs.com under ‘members stories’.
Been liaising with an expert for research for one of my books and discovering so much. I’m so grateful of his knowledge.

Do you want to write a book and you don’t know where to start? You need to discover what type of story is right for you. What books excite you? What films do you love? This will give you an idea of what you’re passionate about. Normally, if you enjoy reading or watching it, you’ll enjoy writing it.
Pick two favourite films and books. Add yourself in the story, change the location, change the events and some of the characters and you’ll soon have a story of your own.

How can you help yourself today? By treating yourself. We’re all really good about giving ourselves a bit of time or a chocolate bar or spending some money on ourselves and feeling bad about it. For today, give yourself a treat and revel in the process. Really enjoy and celebrate it. Dance around and thank yourself for noticing YOU deserve treats!
Do this at least once a week. If you don’t, why will anyone else?
